Respiratory illness is a major problem for women in developing countries owing to the smoke generated from cooking stoves. A professor at MIT has developed a solar stove that doesn’t rely on burning biomass to cook food. David Wilson’s technology uses a lens to funnel light into a container of lithium nitrate, which can hold its temperature for up to 25 hours. This allows the stove to cook items up to 450 degrees without the need for coal or wood to cook.
